Wyndham Hills Park welcomes Madtown Pickleball Open for second year
The Second Annual Madtown Pickleball Open (MPO) began this week on Thursday, July 13 and will run through Sunday, July 16 at Wyndham Hills Park in Sun Prairie. The Madison Area Sports Commission (MASC) is excited to welcome hundreds of participants to this year’s tournament.
Net proceeds from registration benefit the MASC Youth Sports Fund, which provides opportunities for those who may have financial limitations to experience the benefits of sports.
The number of tournament registrants this year saw an increase to 375 from last year’s 250, with players outside of Wisconsin coming from Kansas, Florida, Massachusetts, and Montana to compete.
MPO is a doubles tournament with each session played in a double-elimination, tournament-style format. It is recreation-based and non-sanctioned.
The schedule is as follows:
- Mixed 60+ on Thursday;
- Mixed 50+ and below on Friday;
- All women’s divisions and split-age division on Saturday; and
- All men’s divisions on Sunday.
New this year, the split-age division will feature one player over 60 and one player under 60 with the goal of connecting all generations of pickleball players. Twenty-eight teams are registered for the tournament in this category.
The inaugural MPO saw 250 players compete, with net proceeds raising nearly $10,000 for the Youth Grant program. To date, MASC has awarded more than $406,000 in funding to Dane County area youth sports programs.
MPO is free and open to spectators with parking and shaded areas on site; however, seating is limited. Wyndham Hills Park will also have food carts on site each day for players and spectators.
