A report Wednesday from Forward Analytics, the Wisconsin Counties Association’s nonpartisan research arm, found that the cost of child care in Wisconsin can equate to as much as a third of a family’s income and even surpass what families pay for college tuition, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The report was released hours before the GOP-controlled Legislature rejected Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ call for a $1 billion state expenditure addressing workforce, child care, and other needs, including over $300 million in child care subsidies.
According to the report, Wisconsin’s child care costs can average between 18–36% of a family’s income. At more than $25,000 per year, the cost of child care for two young children surpasses the over $22,000 tuition cost for two undergraduate students at UW–Madison.
