Twelve current and former employees at the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office allege that a rehired former operations director and his bosses have created a toxic work environment that county officials have failed to address, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal. The workers say they have endured screaming and insults from two of their bosses — Barry Irmen, who served as operations director from 2011 until retiring in January and returning to the office on a part-time, interim basis in April, and Dr. Agnieszka Rogalska, now chief medical examiner after serving eight years as deputy chief medical examiner. Rogalska denied the allegations.
Several employees accused Dr. Vincent Tranchida, who now is a deputy medical examiner, of failing to address their concerns, but Tranchida says he never saw Irmen or Rogalska interact with employees in an unprofessional manner. He added that the employees’ concerns were investigated, and corrective actions were “taken where needed.”
