Madison vies to host International Gay Rugby North American Cup
The Madison Minotaurs Rugby Club and the Madison Area Sports Commission have teamed up in an effort that attempts to bring the International Gay Rugby North American Cup to Madison in 2025. The tournament would attract as many as 30 teams from Canada, Mexico, and the United States for what would be one of Madison’s largest-ever rugby tournaments.
Madison holds some key advantages over other bidders; it has one of the best rugby complexes in the U.S. as well as a community and government commitment to LGBTQ+ rights. The Madison Common Council has unanimously declared the city is a Transgender and Non-Binary Sanctuary City, following a similar move by the Dane County Board of Supervisors. It has one of the few Pride Crosswalks in the U.S. and dozens of LGBTQ+ owned-businesses and organizations.
Bidding cities are currently awaiting votes from the participating clubs with a winning announcement expected in mid-July.
