President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the U.S. may purchase Argentine beef to lower prices of U.S. beef, according to an Associated Press report.

Drought and reduced imports from Mexico — due to flesh-eating screwworms — have kept U.S. beef prices high. According to the Department of Labor, the beef and veal index rose 13.9% from August 2024 to August 2025. Uncooked beef steaks rose 16.6%.

A Newsweek report cites Sylvain Charlebois, a professor of food distribution and policy at Dalhousie University in Canada, who told the outlet that importing Argentine beef may not do much to address the price issues in the U.S., as the country only exports a small amount of beef.
