Wisconsin is going old school with its new Blackout and Retro license plate designs, which are now available to drivers.

The two newest license plates feature a black design with white letters and numbers,  and the 1970s-style butter yellow background with black letters and numbers, and the tagline “America’s Dairyland.” Both are expected to raise more than $25 million for the state’s transportation fund in the first three years of release.

“I’m really jazzed folks will start seeing these new plates out on our roads that really showcase our proud Wisconsin heritage and style while also helping us continue our work fixing the darn roads across our state — it’s a win-win for Wisconsin,” Gov. Tony Evers said in a statement.

The 2025-2027 biennial budget included $5.5 million in funding to support the introduction of the two new specialty license plates.

“WisDOT applauds Gov. Evers’ commitment to fixing our roads,” WisDOT Secretary Kristina Boardman said in a statement. “The state budget investment to create these license plates not only meets customer demand for new and stylish plate options but will provide revenue critical to continuing to fix the roads we all rely on.”

Both plates cost a one-time $15 issuance fee, plus a $25 annual registration fee.
