Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is laying off about 8,000 jobs, or 10% of its workforce to invest in AI.
The layoffs begin on May 20. The company also will not hire people for 6,000 open roles, according to CNBC.
Meta also cut about 10% of its employees working on metaverse projects, which is about 1,000 workers.
And March saw hundreds more cuts from Meta.
Job cuts are not unusual with the rise of AI, and Microsoft announced on Thursday it was offering voluntary buyouts to some of its U.S. employees, of which about 7% of the company’s workers are eligible for.
Meta said in its latest annual report in January that it had a global workforce of 78,865 employees as of Dec. 31.
