Wisconsin ranks higher than average for online scams

new study shows Wisconsin ranks No. 22 for the most online shopping scam cases per capita in the U.S. as the holiday shopping season begins. Social Catfish, an online scam prevention company, released a study on States with the Most Online Shopping Scams after analyzing data from the FTC and FBI IC3 released in 2022. Wisconsin reported 71.4 scams per 100,000 residents and a total of 4,208 reports. New Hampshire and Vermont tied for the state with the most scams at 99.2 reports per 100,000 residents. Rhode Island had the least scams at 20.6 reports per 100,000 residents. Americans are expected to see an unprecedented surge in online shopping scams this holiday season as consumers are set to spend a record $209.7 billion buying gifts online. A record $394 million was lost to online shopping scams last year.
