WIAA splits basketball tourneys between Green Bay, Madison

The WIAA Board of Control voted to keep the state high school boys’ basketball championship tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison through 2020, but move the state girls’ tournament to Green Bay’s Resch Center for 2013 and 2014. Madison officials hope to lure the girls’ tournaments back after the two years. The two tournaments pumped a reported $9 million annually into the Madison economy. Greater Madison Visitor and Convention Center president Deb Archer said about $6 million of that will be retained with the boys’ tournament alone.

The compromise appears to be a win-win considering the fact that it appeared Madison would lose both tournaments to Green Bay.

At issue was the availability of the Kohl Center due to scheduling conflicts with UW-Madison’s sports schedules. The UW’s ability to successfully persuade the Big Ten to use neutral sites for its 2014 conference hockey tournaments apparently helped.
