WEDC official resigns following revelation about back taxes

Not long after a bad audit report revived criticism of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp., John Gillespie, hired a month ago as a spokesman for the organization, resigned suddenly after it was learned that he owed over $36,000 in back taxes and had another warranty against him from the Department of Workforce Development, according to a report by WKOW-TV in Madison.

Last week, a Legislative Audit Bureau report identified significant problems at the WEDC, including that the agency had issued millions in grants, loans, and tax breaks without having tracking mechanisms in place.

Gov. Scott Walker reportedly plans to meet with officials at the WEDC to discuss recent issues and allegations.
