Vermont gets first F-35s

A Burlington, Vermont National Guard base received its first F-35 fighter jets after years of planning and community complaints.

Similar to what’s been happening in Madison, the Air Force’s new planes have received strong community reaction from both sides. In Vermont, the state’s most populous county is facing increased noise levels compared to F-16s to as many as 2,600 homes living near its airport. In Madison, studies have shown that 1,000 homes could be negatively impacted in neighborhoods near Truax Field, which also have a disproportionate number of poor and people of color, according to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal.

The issue of noise levels is still being debated in Madison. After a long public meeting, the Madison City Council asked the Air Force to reconsider basing F-35s in Madison.
