UW Hospital doesn’t have to recognize nurses’ union

According to a ruling by the Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission (WERC), UW Hospital does not have to recognize the union its nurses have tried to revive, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. A 2011 state law banning most collective bargaining for most public employees removed UW Hospital from another state law that governs unions for private sector workers and thus allows the hospital to not recognize the SEIU Healthcare Wisconsin union. Both the UW Hospital and the nurses’ union said they will seek additional court action because they disagree on the hospital’s status under state labor law.
