UnityPoint Health merger DOA

A proposed merger between Iowa-based UnityPoint Health and Sioux Falls, South Dakota-based Sanford Health, one of the country’s largest health-care systems, will not occur after all. The two health-care systems signed a nonbinding letter of intent in June which would have created an $11 billion health system ranked among the nation’s largest.

In Madison, UnityPoint Health affiliated itself with Meriter Hospital in 2014, and two years later, the local hospital adopted the name UnityPoint Health – Meriter.

No reason was specified for the abrupt decision, although in one report from the Des Moines Register, a Sanford official reportedly said that UnityPoint “failed to embrace the vision.”
