Ultimate Spa Salon closes without warning

“It’s sad,” said Monona Mayor Bob Miller, about the closing of longtime Monona business The Ultimate Spa Salon. A handwritten note on the front door of The salon at 5713 Monona Drive simply stated that the business is closed and that only gift cards with proof of purchase will be honored.

The reasons for the closing are unknown, although some former employees had reportedly “seen the writing on the wall,” according to a source who asked to remain anonymous.

Debi Offerdahl, 52, has owned the salon for more than 25 years. In a Madison.com story from 2007, Offerdahl said her mother originally started the shop with just five hairdressers. When she was just 21 years old, her parents died and Offerdahl kept the salon. In 1992, she purchased the building, and by 2007, the business employed 70 people.

Much speculation remains as to the reasons for the salon’s demise, and customers, particularly those who purchased gift cards, are asked to contact the salon’s accountant, Theran Welsh, at 831-8181.

“Debi’s been wonderful to the community,” Miller said, “and I hope there is a happy ending to all of this.”
