Sun Prairie blast causes major losses

An explosion the evening of July 10 in downtown Sun Prairie claimed the life of firefighter Cory Barr, injured several others, and demolished at least two downtown businesses along Main Street. At last report, the Barr House, Glass Nickel Pizza, the Professional Building, Water Tower Chophouse, and a private residence suffered significant damage.

The Bank of Sun Prairie building on Main Street is reportedly closed until further notice due to damage caused by the blast, although all other branches remain open. Despite the damage, the bank has established a Sun Prairie Disaster Relief Fund to help those affected, according to a release.

Officials are still trying to determine the cause of the blast, which occurred within an hour of the discovery of a gas leak. A spokesperson for Verizon confirmed a contractor for Bear Communications was working on a fiber project for the wireless carrier before the explosion, according to an NBC15 report.
