Strong Harley-Davidson sales lift quarterly profits by 44%

Stronger domestic and foreign motorcycle sales helped Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson post quarterly profits of $172 million in the first quarter of 2012, a 44% increase over the same quarter of 2011.

Harley reported that its Q1 net income, which was 74 cents per share, compared to $119.3 million, or 51 cents per share, in Q1 of the previous year.

The company reported $1.43 billion in quarterly revenue, surpassing the $1.22 billion in the first quarter of 2011. Quarterly revenue from motorcycle sales reached $1.27 billion, up 20% over the prior year quarter, as U.S. motorcycle sales rose 25.5% and overseas sales jumped 20.3%.
