Plan Commission reviewing plan for 331-unit housing development
A controversial development proposal by Chicago-based Vermilion Development that would see the historic Filene House at 1617 Sherman Ave. demolished and replaced with several buildings offering a combined 331 apartment and townhome units is being reviewed today by the Madison Plan Commission, according to a report from The Capital Times.
The development has faced opposition from neighbors who believe the complex will be too large to blend in with the surrounding area. Additionally, Madison’s Landmarks Commission found the Filene House has historic value; however, in February, Madison’s City Council rejected the Landmark Commission’s recommendation and voted against protections for the building, paving the way for the Vermilion development.
The Plan Commission will vote Monday on whether to approve a demolition permit for the Filene House as well as to rezone the property for the development proposal.
