What have you accomplished in your professional life/career since your 40 Under 40 selection?

Our boutique estate and business planning law firm, which was three years old when I was selected for 40 Under 40, just celebrated its ninth anniversary earlier this year. During the past six years, our firm has more than doubled in staff, tripled our annual revenue, and quadrupled our office footprint. We have applied our straight-forward, project-based, flat-fee engagement approach to all of our practice areas, allowing us to continue to grow lasting relationships with our clients to turn the traditional attorney-client relationship on its head — frankly, our clients want to be members of our club!

What accomplishments, milestones, or endeavors have you attained in your personal life since your 40 Under 40 selection?

Through the growth and success of our practice, I have been able to move my family to our dream home on Lake Monona, realizing a long-term goal of ours to live on the water. I have also been able to carve out time to coach my son’s traveling basketball team for the past two years. The growth of our team has allowed me to take more time away and travel with my family throughout the country to places that have always been on our bucket list.

If you were to “do it all over again,” what (if anything) would you do differently throughout your career?

I have the good fortune to be able to honestly say there isn’t much I would have done differently. Shayna Borakove and I bet on ourselves nine years ago, and that leap of faith couldn’t have worked out any better. We started the firm with a commitment to our core values, and we have never deviated from them. We hired our first employee, Erika Wiskes, seven and a half years ago and she has grown with us to this day, helping to cement our positive client relationships and further our estate-planning practice. Each time we have been faced with a major decision, we made it with confidence and didn’t look back.

How did your 40 Under 40 selection help your career?

The recognition that came from the 40 Under 40 selection helped to reinforce existing professional relationships and open the door to new ones. Further, it helped to reinforce my belief in myself, to know that we were on the right path. At a time when we were in the trenches building this business, it gave me the confidence to believe in the direction we were heading and that it would pay off. Finally, it helped to build brand awareness for our (at the time) young law firm, which is invaluable.

What is something that you have a new passion for since the time of your induction — either professionally or personally?

Professionally, as our firm has grown, I have developed an increased passion for business succession planning. We have had the unique opportunity to work with some incredible Wisconsin-based businesses that have created success worthy of being passed on to the next generation of business owners. It has been incredibly rewarding to hear the stories of these local business owners and to see the fruits of their labor as they exit and pass their legacy on.

Based on your experience, do you have any advice for today’s young professionals (under 40)?

Believe in yourself and trust your gut — and do it now. The most important advice I could give is to find what you love to do and pursue it. If you do that, you will wake up every Monday excited for the week to come!
