Owners of contaminated property ask for passage of ‘innocent buyer’ bill
Wisconsin residents with preexisting contamination on their properties they didn’t cause were allowed to share their stories to legislators in support of a bill to shift the responsibility for cleanup elsewhere, according to a report from The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. If passed, 2021 Assembly Bill 579 could relieve property owners of the burden of hundreds of thousands of dollars in cleanup costs. Last week, property owners shared their experiences with the Assembly Committee on the Environment in support of the legislation. The bill could potentially absolve responsibility for contamination not caused by the owner if the building was purchased before 1992.
