New RFP to be issued for Park St. development

A new RFP will be issued for the former Truman Olson United States Army Center site at 1402 S. Park St. after Welton Enterprises and the city couldn’t come to a workable agreement. The 3.5-acre, city-owned property will be rebid in a scaled-down version of the original proposal, one that makes the addition of a grocery store a priority.

Welton responded to the first bid early last year and proposed a 30,000-square-foot grocery store and a 52-unit, four-story housing complex. At the time, the RFP included different minimum requirements. Reportedly, talks between the two will continue until a new RFP is issued.

Meanwhile, the Pick’n Save grocery store next door at 1312 S. Park St. will be demolished to make way for an SSM Health office building, advancing the need for a new grocery store to replace it. The Madison City Council is expected to take up the RFP requirements at its May 14 meeting. If it agrees, developers will have until August 9 to submit new plans, according to The Capital Times.
