Neighbors urge reconsideration of large Oscar Mayer housing project
A group of north side Madison residents is urging city leaders to reconsider an area development proposal near the former Oscar Mayer site, according to a report from Channel 3000. The group aims to protect wetlands in the area from contaminants that may be disturbed by the development. The proposal in question is part of the redevelopment of the Oscar Mayer site that would bring a 550-unit affordable housing development to the Hartmeyer Natural Area. A spokesperson for the neighborhood group says the site’s proximity to the former meat processing plant could disturb contaminants in the soil during the building process.
