Nathan Kublank , Aspiriant
IB’s Professional of the Week is the premier way to meet Dane County’s professionals. This week features Nathan Kublank , director – investment advisory, Aspiriant.
What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
One of the most significant challenges we face in our profession is helping clients deal with a seemingly constant barrage of negative or confusing news headlines about economic and political events. I find it very rewarding to help alleviate the anxiety clients often develop as they read this information and to keep them focused on what really matters most to them.
Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
I had the pleasure of meeting Michael Kitces during my CPWA coursework and participating in a study session led by him. I was amazed at his passion and knowledge regarding all things related to wealth planning. Learning from him during that coursework and reading most of what he publishes on a regular basis inspires me to stretch my technical knowledge every day.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
Being offered the opportunity to join the team at Aspiriant. I’m so thankful to be a part of an organization that serves clients with distinction and has every technical resource an advisor could wish for. It’s fun reconnecting with clients who have appreciated the advice we have given them over the years. It is also very exciting to talk with prospective clients about how we can help them live more fulfilling lives.
Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year- old self?
I’m always thinking about a variety of things that will impact clients. So I would say to my younger self: Try not to worry so much about things you can’t control. Remember to spend as much time as possible connecting with clients and getting to know them the best you can. Then concentrate on the steps you can take to address their concerns and help them achieve their goals.

What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?
As a native Wisconsinite, I had always dreamed about attending the University of Wisconsin. During my time in college, I really fell in love with Madison and the surrounding area. Dane County has everything one could ask for — great schools, amazing outdoor recreation, friendly communities, and easy access to other wonderful parts of our state.
Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?
I’m a private pilot and absolutely love learning about flying. My interest in aviation was inspired by my older brother, who was the true flying enthusiast. Unfortunately, a plane crash left him disabled, but that didn’t end his love for flying. I strove to get my own license so I can fly with my brother and help him live his dream. He taught me to never let fear get in the way of anything and that challenges can be overcome.
What are your guilty pleasures?
A bit of two extremes: First, I must admit to watching Project Runway with my wife. I enjoy critiquing the fashion designs with her. Also, I’m a metal head. I was born the same year Metallica was formed, and have always been a fan of loud, heavy music. Other favorite bands include Motörhead, AC/DC, Alice in Chains, and Def Leppard.
