MMSD to select superintendent by March 2024

According to the Capital Times, the Madison Metropolitan School District is unlikely to name its next superintendent before March of next year. Last month, the board selected retired MMSD educator Lisa Kvistad as the interim superintendent.

After a presentation of two search timelines presented by consultant Alma Advisory Group, the majority of Madison School Board members indicated support for an option that would allow for planning over the summer, community input in the fall, a final candidate choice by March 2024, and the candidate’s assumption of the role in summer 2024.

The alternate plan, with a shorter timeline, would have confined stakeholder input to June and set the final decision for this September, with the new superintendent starting around January 2024.

The board believes that, in addition to allowing for more input from staff, families, and community members, the longer timeline may attract a wider applicant pool, as the decision of when to start a candidate selected in September could have been tricky if they were coming from another school district.

Community input will be solicited at open community gatherings, interviews, focus groups, and surveys; it will help inform the job profile to be posted in October.
