Milken: Madison falls on Best-Performing list

The Milken Institute released its 2018 index of best-performing cities, and Madison did not fare well.

While Provo-Orem, Utah held steady to remain at number one, Madison dropped 14 spots to No. 72 (No. 58 last year). Milken’s index measures job growth over time relative to the national average, wages, and technology output. Compared to Milken’s 2017 rankings, the top five large cities in 2018 are Provo-Orem, which held its position; San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, California (+9 spots); Austin-Round Rock, Texas (+6 spots); San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco, California (steady); and Dallas-Plano-Irving, Texas (-2 spots).

Among small cities, the top three didn’t change position from 2017. Bend-Redmond, Oregon topped the list, followed by St. George, Utah and Gainesville, Georgia. Elkhart-Goshen, Indiana came in at No. 4, despite falling two spots, while Coeur d’Alene, Idaho leapfrogged many other metro areas, jumping from No. 29 to No. 5 year over year.
