MGE explosion cleanup may take two months

The explosion and fire at a Madison Gas & Electric and American Transmission Co. substation on Blount Street could require a two-month cleanup, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.

The explosion occurred the morning of July 19, the hottest day of 2019 thus far, and left about 13,000 MGE customers in the isthmus area without power.

The exact cause of the fire is still unknown, although ATC discovered a mechanical issue just days before the blast and was scheduled to repair the problem.

ATC has also requested that the 700 block of East Main Street remain closed during cleanup to allow vehicles access to the site.
