Meriter nurse to plead guilty

A former Meriter Hospital nurse, Christopher Kaphaem, 44, has agreed to plead guilty to harming nine babies in the hospital’s newborn intensive care unit (NICU), according to his attorney.

All but one of the victims was born prematurely, and injuries ranged from bruising to broken ribs, legs, and skull fractures.

The plea deal means the case will not go to trial, which was scheduled to begin in October. Kaphaem worked for Meriter for more than 14 years and his nursing license was suspended in February 2018. He faces 19 felony child abuse counts, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.
