Massive hotel approved to replace MATC downtown site

It took the better part of two years, but the city Plan Commission has approved plans for a major downtown hotel development on the site of Madison College’s Downtown Education Center, according to a report in the Wisconsin State Journal.

Developer Drury Southwest now can move ahead with plans to build an eight-story addition as part of converting the existing campus building, 211 N. Carroll St., into a 315-room hotel. Since no zoning changes are needed, City Council approval isn’t required.

Combined with the 373-room Concourse Hotel right across the street at 1 W. Dayton St., the block eventually will have roughly 700 hotel rooms.

Madison College plans to leave its Downtown Education Center next June and move into its new South Campus, which is now under construction at the corner of Park Street and Badger Road.
