IB’s Professional of the Week is the premier way to meet Dane County’s professionals. This week features Marianne Gariti, owner, Moving Forward Madison.
What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
I attribute much of the success of this business to my wonderful, dedicated staff. They are top notch and I am truly blessed. I find it to be challenging to find ways to let them know how much I value them, as well as keeping them from suffering from burnout.
Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
I have to say that I really admire Elon Musk. I am so inspired by the way he risked it all in order to succeed. I also admire the fact that he never stops being productive and innovative.
What has been the high point of your career so far?
I am so grateful to have had a number of high points along the way, but I would have to say that receiving the A+ Accreditation from our National Association of Senior Move Managers really stands out to me. This is a great accomplishment in our industry and I was just so thrilled to have achieved it!
Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
Develop a strong work ethic and do not be afraid to fail. One of my favorite quotes is from Winston Churchill: “Success is being able to go from failure to failure without the loss of enthusiasm.”
What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?
For me safety is huge. Both on a professional and a personal level, I love being able to go new places and meet new people and always feel safe.
Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?
Well, something I have learned about myself through this business is that I have a natural ability to put our clients and their families at ease, often after a very brief conversation. Moving out of the family home is such a huge step for people to take that they often avoid taking it until the last possible moment. I love being able to reassure them that it is doable and that the Moving Forward staff will do all we can to make the downsizing and moving process as smooth as possible.
What are your guilty pleasures?
Well, I do love playing cards, particularly poker and euchre. I’m not really good at either one but I enjoy playing both. I love having card marathons with my husband, Jim, and our two sons, Alex and Zachary. During our last vacation, Jim and I reclaimed our family’s euchre championship (after 55 games)!
