Madison’s newest one-stop shop for health and fitness

There’s a new health and wellness facility opening in town, one that’s quite unlike anything else that’s come before it.

Carbon World Health, the brainchild of Dr. Nestor Rodriguez, the fitness and medical spa’s medical director, and partners Ashley Greer, spa director, and Russ Beier, fitness director, is billed as a one-stop shop for fitness, health, and beauty. One look at the list of services and procedures the facility will offer makes it clear the description is not far off.

Located on the west side of Madison, the Latino-owned business, which will celebrate its grand opening from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29, including a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 5 p.m., is “a premier and luxurious spa that exposes our clients to ‘lifestyle medicine,’” explains Rodriguez, “a holistic approach to fitness, health, and beauty. At Carbon World Health we believe a healthy body and mind is a reflection of a healthy lifestyle. Therefore, we challenge our clients to think about their health and fitness as a lifestyle choice instead of something based on physical appearance or a number on the scale.”

Under the direction of Rodriguez, a board-certified physician, Carbon World Health will provide innovative therapies and customized programs to a target audience of professional men and women ages 30 to 60 who are seeking alternative ways to optimize their well-being.

Rodriguez says the medical spa is designed to provide a premium experience in the comfort of an upscale environment, while the fitness side of the facility will offer a medically supervised and scientifically designed functional fitness training program.

So far opening the new business has been a bit of a whirlwind, admits Rodriguez. CWH’s full website still won’t even be active until next week, he notes. But it’s been worth it.

“This has been an interesting ride, as they don’t teach you business in medical school,” says Rodriguez. “We actually sought out business mentors to assist us in the process. After different financial options, we ended up getting an SBA loan. The process was definitely challenging but with the right team to help was doable. We recently joined the Latino Chamber of Commerce, which will assist us further in the process of promoting and running the business in the future.”

A unique health and fitness experience

Rodriguez is quick to note that Madison has other facilities focusing on cosmetics, fitness, or weight loss, but Carbon World Health is unique because it combines all three under one roof.

“From our own experiences we saw a need to create a comprehensible lifestyle-changing facility that traditionally is only available for the professional athlete or Hollywood star,” Rodriguez says. “We had the opportunity to create this facility in Los Angeles or New York but we felt people in Madison would benefit more.

“People are too busy nowadays to run around from place to place,” Rodriguez continues. We wanted to expose our community to things that only people in the big cities normally get to experience. We believe Madison has all the benefits of a big city without the big city hassles.”

Carbon World Health offers a wide variety of services and procedures including, but not limited to, aesthetics, laser treatments, weight-loss programs, and body contouring, according to Rodriguez. However, a few unique services that aren't found anywhere else in Madison include:

  • Cryosauna, which exposes the body to ultra-low temperatures, ranging from -200°F to -240°F, for a short period of time to lower the skin’s surface temperature and stimulate receptors. Cryotherapy helps reduce pain and inflammation and can shorten recovery times from strenuous workouts or injuries.
  • Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (males only), which offers custom-designed treatment regimens for each client to counteract the negative effects of hormone imbalances and age-related effects. “We believe the full health benefits of hormone replacement treatments are associated with restoring the levels of your hormones to the ‘optimal’ range and not the ‘normal-for-age’ range,” notes Rodriguez. “Specifically, this means raising your hormone levels to the upper-half of the reference range, in our opinion.”
  • Unlimited fitness training, a unique system that doesn’t limit members to a set number of sessions per month or scheduled training periods. The system integrates warm-ups and prehabilitation, high-intensity interval training, cardiovascular strength and endurance, muscle strength, and recovery and rehabilitation.
  • IV vitamin therapy, which utilizes intravenous rehydration IV therapies to replace fluid, electrolytes, and vitamins lost due to heavy sweating, heat illness, vomiting, diarrhea, excess alcohol consumption, and more.

“There are a lot of misconceptions and stereotypes that exist around many of these services that just aren’t true when they are done correctly and with a client’s safety in mind,” notes Rodriguez. “When a client comes into Carbon World Health we offer a free consultation that gives them the information they need to make an educated decision on all these services. In addition, we create an ongoing working template/program so that we can address their concerns in a step-by-step approach with the understanding that everyone is at a different stage of life mentally, physically, and financially.”

Prices across the full suite of services vary, says Rodriguez, from as little as $25 to a couple thousand dollars. Programs are customized for clients to fit just about any budget and to make services that are traditionally very expensive more affordable.

Meet the team

Rodriguez emigrated from El Salvador to the inner city of south-central Los Angeles at the age of seven. Despite coming from a single parent, Spanish-only speaking home, Rodriguez was the first member of his family to obtain a high school diploma, from Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He subsequently earned his undergraduate degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology at Yale University, and his doctorate in medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, where he found a passion for sports medicine, cosmetic procedures, and emergency medicine.

Ashley Greer, CWH’s spa director, is a southern Wisconsin native with more than 15 years of experience in a hospital setting as an interventional and computed tomographer. She specializes in treating wrinkles and facial volume loss, as well as improving acne, skin tone, and texture. She is also experienced in creating long-term, customized weight-loss programs to assist clients in keeping the weight off.

Russ Beier, CWH’s fitness director, has been a part of the personal training and fitness industry for more than 19 years. A former competitive football player, he experienced firsthand the impact an elite fitness program can have in an athlete’s career, and as a personal trainer he has helped numerous clients achieve their fitness goals.
