Madison to host first Native Market this weekend
The Capital Times announced that Madison will host a new Native Art Market, beginning this Friday, May 5, and running through Sunday, May 7.
The market, organized by Dakota Mace — a Diné artist and 2019 recipient of the Forward Art Prize — and Paige Skenandore — a member of the Oneida Nation and recent UW–Madison graduate — aims to support Indigenous artists and will feature 17 artists from nine tribes.
The market will feature demonstrations of beadwork and quillwork as well as art for sale. It is intended to become a regular event, and plans for a second Native Art Market are already in place for this fall.
UW–Madison has assisted the Native Art Market in the provision of stipends and free or reduced housing for participants.
The market will take place at Arts + Literature Laboratory on 111 S. Livingston St. It will have a preview showcase Friday night from 5–9 p.m. and run Saturday–Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
