Madison lawyer indicted

Attorney Patrick S. Sweeney has been charged with wire fraud, identity theft, and making a false declaration related to a bankruptcy. According to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal, he charges date back to 2007 when Sweeney was the managing member and had control of the bank accounts of three limited liability companies — Fairview Ridge, Fairview Ridge II, and Fairview Ridge III.

He is charged with allegedly defrauding the partnership of more than $420,000 by using and forging another man’s name. Sweeney faces up to 27 years in prison on the various charges.

The State Journal reports that UW–Madison Athletic Director Barry Alvarez filed suit against Sweeney and other lawyers last February related to investments he, his wife, and their son made that were later found to be part of a $930 million Ponzi scheme run out of Miami, Fla. Reportedly, the Alvarez family sustained $1 million in losses as a result of that scheme.
