Madison doctor opens abortion clinic across state border

Last year, Dr. Dennis Christiansen, an obstetrician-gynecologist who has provided abortions in Madison and Milwaukee and is semi-retired, purchased two properties in Rockford, Illinois with the intent to open abortion clinics in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. Now, the first clinic has opened and the second is expected to open this spring, according to a report from the Wisconsin State Journal.

The first clinic, the Rockford Family Planning Center, provides an office visit, medication, and a follow-up call for $475, according to Christiansen. The clinic, at 611 Auburn St., also offers pregnancy confirmation and dating, counseling, and referrals for surgical abortions and prenatal care.

The Rockford Family Planning Foundation is preparing the other site at 4236 Maray Drive for surgical abortions and other care, including birth control and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections.

Christiansen expects to be treating patients from southern Wisconsin who no longer have access to abortion services due to lingering questions about whether the state’s 1849 abortion law is enforceable.
