Madison College plans state's largest rooftop solar install

Madison College will add $1.8 million to a grant from Madison Gas and Electric to build a 1,400-kilowatt solar photovoltaic (PV) system on top of the main Truax Campus building in Madison.

According to a release, the system, which will be visible and accessible to students, could save the campus more than $200,000 per year in electricity costs.

Once installed, it will be the largest rooftop solar photovoltaic system in the state. Averaged over an entire year, the system will offset about 10% to 15% of the college’s total electric consumption.

MGE and the college plan to announce a solar developer in August. The college plans to involve students in the installation of 6,000 to 7,000 solar panels beginning in summer 2018 and it should be completed in a few months.

American Family Insurance is finishing a 4,500-panel, 1,000-kilowatt system at its national headquarters in Madison, which is the current largest rooftop solar system in the state.
