Madison Club to remove wallpaper after complaints

In a decision that will cost roughly $10,000 to $15,000, the Madison Club will replace wallpaper that some found racially offensive, according to an article in the Wisconsin State Journal.

The wallpaper, which was installed in the club’s Roosevelt Reading Room as part of a recent remodeling project, reportedly depicts monkeys dressed in human clothes walking on stilts, painting, and playing the flute.

The 110-year-old Madison Club, located downtown at 5 E. Wilson St., told the newspaper that it received a handful of complaints about the wallpaper, which was installed as part of a two-year, $2.5 million interior-remodeling project.

Madison Club board president Mike Theo said the wallpaper wasn’t intended to be offensive but was aligned with a Georgian design theme the club had sought to convey.
