Madison adapts former nursing home for homeless shelter

Over the last few months, after the city of Madison acquired the Karmenta Center at 4502 Milwaukee St., it has worked with the Salvation Army of Dane County to transform the former nursing facility into a shelter to serve 35 homeless families, according to a Wisconsin State Journal story. The city purchased the 36,192-square-foot building in January for $2.75 million and has been refurbishing the facility so the Salvation Army, which has long provided shelter to homeless single women and families, can house families there. The Salvation Army will begin moving families to the facility in mid-May.
