Local TV station sued for defamation

Retired Milwaukee police sergeant Mark D. Wagner Jr. is suing WKOW-TV for defamation after the station misidentified him as a similarly named retired Milwaukee officer, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report. The Feb. 21 story by Tony Galli described the shooting of Quadren Wilson, an unarmed Black man in February on Madison’s far east side. In the story, Galli claimed Mark Wagner, as a member of the Milwaukee Police Department in 2002, shot and killed a suspect in Milwaukee, and was later cleared of any wrongdoing. The officer involved in the 2002 shooting was Mark P. Wagner. The lawsuit claims that the station failed to check on the identity of the agent and even after the station became aware of the error, it ran the false story at least once.
