Landmarks Commission halts approval for Monroe Street building

The Madison Landmarks Commission reversed an earlier decision to approve a three-story, 22,000-square-foot building on the corner of Monroe and Glenway streets, deciding that the building’s size would adversely impact the historic integrity of the Arbor House bed and breakfast next door. One of the two buildings at the Arbor House is the 161-year-old former Plough Inn, which in its heyday was a favorite watering hole for soldiers at Camp Randall.

The commission’s reversal went against the recommendations of city staff.
