Kim Schuchardt, Lasting Skin Solutions

IB’s Professional of the Week is the premier way to meet Dane County’s professionals. This week features Kim Schuchardt, physician assistant and owner, Lasting Skin Solutions.

What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?

Being in the medical field for over 33 years, first as a registered nurse and soon after as a physician assistant, I find it challenging to convince patients to make sure that they take time out from caring for everyone else in their life and begin to focus on caring for themselves. After all, if we are not well rested and centered, we are just draining our batteries when we give our vital energy only to others.

Each morning when we’re getting ready for the day, we look in the mirror and oftentimes we see things that we don’t like about ourselves — things no one else sees. The most rewarding times in my career have been hearing patients say how a treatment has changed the way they feel about and see themselves. We all deserve to feel good about the way we look when we look in the mirror.

Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?

For 12 years I had the honor of working under the guidance of an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Arnold Rosenthal. As a medical business owner and orthopedic surgeon, he was a master of running a successful medical practice, and over the years he taught me the key factors needed to do the same in my own business. In turn, I helped him care for patients — primarily how to listen to their concerns and how to communicate with them and help them through the process.

What has been the high point of your career so far?

The high point of my career is really right now! While I have amassed an enormous amount of experience, I am always striving to be better. At this point in my career, I’m still seeking new and innovative approaches to counteract aging and improving the well-being of my clients, while having fun doing it. I am focusing on what I love and that brings me great joy!

Thinking back on your career, what advise would you give to your 21-year old self?

Enjoy the moment. In my continual striving for success and my tenacity for hard work, I’ve found that oftentimes I wasn’t enjoying the journey. In a favorite movie of mine, About Time, a father and son have the ability to relive the same day twice — once as they would typically go about their day, while the second time around they were actually able to be present in the moments and enjoy it! The message is a powerful one — celebrate and relish the moments as you live them!

What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?

Our family really takes advantage of the wonderful hiking and biking trails found in and around Madison. We also enjoy road trips with the camper to explore the state park systems and take in the quiet surroundings with no distractions. In keeping with a healthy lifestyle, finding organic food at a reasonable cost is easy to do in Dane County with all of the wonderful farmer’s markets that can be found locally.

We also feel privileged to live in a community that feels so passionately about giving back to others. We are happy to partner with and support Second Harvest Food Bank, Domestic Abuse Intervention Services, and the American Family Children’s Hospital, as well as our own charitable program, Saving Faces. Saving Faces was created to help survivors of domestic abuse and other traumatic events by minimizing physical scars that may remind them of an unpleasant situation in their past. We are so fortunate to help change the way they see themselves after the treatment.

Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?

I just succeeded in my lifelong dream to become a pilot! Both of my parents are pilots, so for years I have wanted to complete my license, and I am so incredibly excited to have accomplished that goal. Our family is looking forward to doing some flying together; my daughter has found a new hobby of climbing mountains, and so I am looking forward to flying her to different locations around the country to explore new and exciting adventures!

What are your guilty pleasures?

I really love to cook with the organic foods that I get from local sources, and I appreciate having the time to prepare a wholesome meal for my family. On a cold wintery day, we love to sit in front of a fire while binge-watching the latest series on Netflix!
