IB’s Professional of the Week is the premier way to meet Dane County’s professionals. This week features Josh Bindl, CEO, National CooperativeRx.
1. What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your job and why?
Being on the job since July, it is challenging to lead an organization from day one while also learning about it. I feel fortunate to have a team of such knowledgeable and dedicated people who have made the transition much easier.
For me the most rewarding aspects of any job are the accomplishments that you can be a part of achieving. Whether it is identifying a challenge and finding a solution, or achieving goals and/or objectives, striving to feel that sense of accomplishment never gets old.
2. Who do you look up to or admire in business and why?
While with my previous employer, Wisconsin Counties Association, I learned skills from Executive Director Mark O’Connell that I continue to hone today. Specifically, Mr. O’Connell has a powerful ability to educate and persuade in an extremely effective manner.
Further, at times I think customer service is a lost art. I do not go so far as to say the customer is always right, but I do think many people forget to provide customer service. While in high school I worked at The Shoe Box. To this day I value the focus on customer service I learned from the owner, Steve Schmitt.
3. What has been the high point of your career so far?
Becoming CEO of National CooperativeRx. A goal of my professional life was to lead an organization and focus my attention on the mission of that organization. Realizing that dream has been the high point in my career thus far, and I look forward to many more high points in the future.
4. Thinking back on your career, what advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
I would tell myself to learn as much as possible. You never know the opportunities or challenges you will be faced with, so arm yourself with as much experience and knowledge to prepare yourself for whatever life will throw at you.

5. What would you say are the best things about living and working in Dane County?
Dane County has so much variety without the travel issues that can be experienced in other cities. We live in an area with access to just about anything we want or need within a half hour drive. I like to think of Dane County as having all of the services of a large city, with the convenience and values of a small community.
6. Do you have any secret talents or abilities that people would be surprised to discover?
My children are always impressed when I walk on my hands. It is something I learned when I was in the first grade and have never really lost the ability. As I get older the blood rushing to my head does get more concerning.
7. What are your guilty pleasures?
Without a question my guilty pleasure is rap music. I was first introduced to rap music in the mid-90s during the rise of rappers and rap groups. I was always drawn to the beat, but I also think I was drawn to the stories from people with a much different lifestyle. Although I enjoyed it more during high school and college, I still enjoy listening to the classics on Pandora while I am mowing the lawn and nobody else can hear what is playing.
