Introducing the Dane County Jobs and Prosperity Project | submitted by Joe Parisi

We benefit from a diverse economy in Dane County – from high tech and biotech, to a more than $3 billion agricultural economy, to a thriving green economy and a robust small business community where 86% of employers have 10 or fewer employees.

This diversity has long given us strength. Historically, our county has benefited from low unemployment rates and median income levels ahead of the state average. To ensure continued prosperity in the decades ahead, I believe now is the time to refocus our efforts and ensure that Dane County is doing everything it can to facilitate and promote economic development.

To that end, and to make good on a promise I made to you before I was elected, I have launched a new economic development initiative called the Dane County Jobs and Prosperity Project. As a part of the project, I’ll be holding listening sessions at local businesses this summer to collect input from employers, employees, economic development professionals – anyone with an interest in the county’s economic future.

At the sessions I’ve already held, I received some excellent advice from the community. You have told me that one of the keys to economic development is a cooperative regional approach – what’s good for Roxbury is what’s good for Stoughton – and that by coordinating the needs of businesses with our top-notch educational institutions, we can have an even stronger, skilled workforce with family-supporting jobs.

I urge you to join the conversation as well. The feedback I get from you will inform my economic development initiatives for my 2012 budget, my first as Dane County executive.

Information on the remaining listening sessions can be found below. If you’re unable to attend in person, please visit the Dane County Jobs and Prosperity website at and fill out our online survey and share your views.

Our economy also provides a fantastic quality of life in Dane County. As a lifelong resident, a husband, a father, and now county executive, I know there’s no greater place to live, work, and play. Let’s continue working together to keep it that way.
