Initiative launched to address impact of COVID-19 on communities of color

The Just Recovery for Racial Equity initiative is a joint effort to address communities disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and will be carried out by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and the Population Health Institute (PHI) at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, according to a release from Gov. Tony Evers’ office.

Data shows Black, Latinx, and indigenous populations are significantly over-represented among COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. The $2.6 million Just Recovery initiative aims to identify and support strategies for responding to COVID-19, and build resilience in communities of color by partnering with community-based organizations and local groups, including other government and social service agencies. Under the program, to be administered by PHI, grants will be awarded to community-based organizations as well as staffing and translation services.
