Infant injuries to send nurse to trial

Christopher M. Kaphaem, 43, of Middleton, will stand trial on 19 counts of patient abuse for allegedly harming nine infants while under his care at UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital.

Kaphaem was suspended from his nursing job at Meriter’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit after reports began coming in of injuries to infants.

In a preliminary trial, Circuit Judge Stephen Ehlke said there was enough evidence to conclude Kaphaem probably committed the crimes, ranging from bruises and broken bones to a skull fracture, according to a Wisconsin State Journal report.
