Madison-area businesses step up for the Salvation Army

For most of us, poverty and homelessness exist on the fringes of our daily lives. It’s the same at this time of year, when those cheerful Salvation Army bell-ringers — a staple of the holiday season for more than a century — begin to gently nudge us toward a spirit of giving. But while hope and charity traditionally take center stage from mid-November through January, they’re actually in greater demand at other times of the year.

Prominent local businesses have helped clean up Madison’s lakes, but the fight’s not over

If there’s one thing that Clean Lakes Alliance Vice President James Tye wants you to know about Madison’s lakes and the danger they still face, it’s this: Just one pound of phosphorous leaked into a lake produces 500 pounds of algae. It’s a jarring statistic, and it emphasizes just how fragile our lakes’ health is, how urgent a task keeping them clean has become, and how vital awareness is to the ongoing broad-based community effort to keep our lakes useable and Madison the envy of other Midwestern towns.

Centennial Sentiments: The Rotary Club of Madison celebrates 100 years of ‘Service Above Self’

It’s hard to imagine Madison without its many nonprofit organizations, and perhaps no nonprofit has contributed more to the community than the Rotary Club of Madison, which will observe its 100th birthday this spring. The service organization, which is part of Rotary International, was founded on June 2, 1913.
