Homes demolished to make way for another East Wash hotel?

The McGrath Property Group is hoping to bring a five-story hotel to the corner of East Washington Avenue and Franklin Street, but it would mean demolishing four homes that currently include nine residential units.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, McGrath is interested in an extended-stay brand with between 50 and 60 larger rooms suitable for stays up to 27 days.

The idea is raising some concerns about the loss of historical and affordable housing, as well as parking. The developer could move at least one of the homes, at 502 E. Washington Ave. to another location.

Costs are not yet known, but meetings with the Urban Design Commission and the Plan Commission have been scheduled.
