Groom-to-be says ‘I do’ to Get Fit Challenge

Ten professionals and 10 teams are competing in the 2014 Get Fit Challenge, a spinoff of IB’s popular Fittest Executive Challenge. Who will earn the healthiest marks? Follow along on Facebook and then find out at the In Business Expo & Conference on Oct. 22. This week, IB checks in with Eric Schappe of TURIS, which is competing in the team challenge. Schappe’s co-workers Sarah Phillips, Brady O’Brien, and Michael Whaley round out the team.

Like many of my fellow Get Fit contestants, I am trying to change my personal health trajectory, and the Get Fit Challenge gives me a goal I can strive for. My goal is twofold.

For one, I am getting married in August of this year, so this challenge coincides with our big day nicely. When Mike, our fearless leader, was asking people in the office if anyone was interested in joining him, I immediately thought, “This would be a great way to motivate myself to lose a few pounds before I say ‘I do.’”

Not only has the wedding motivated me to exercise, it has also helped me cope with the mounting stress before the wedding, and writing this with about three weeks to go, I can say that my stress levels are lower than I thought they would be. The program has also helped my fiancée and me to really take a look at our lifestyles and change some of our habits so we can live healthier lives.

I think some of the most trying issues for me personally have been staying focused and finding time to exercise. Again, while doing this prior to the wedding, I have been much busier than I might normally be, which makes for that much less time to work out and eat right. As we all know, it is much easier to order a pizza on a night after you’ve worked late and have about 10 things you want to accomplish before bed.

However, by planning our meals for the week and preparing food the night before, we have helped stave off the slippery slope of dining out. I have concluded that if you really want to succeed, you are often your own biggest barrier. But when you make it easier for yourself to make the right decisions, you’re much more likely to succeed. Making meals ahead of time seems so simple, but when you get home and food is in the crockpot ready to eat, it is a nice surprise.

As with any new adventure, I wasn’t sure how or where this was going to lead me, but I can say for certain that I am so happy that I have taken part in this. I am looking forward to continuing this adventure and living a healthier and fitter life with my new wife.
