Time for a team-building experience or company-wide volunteer activity?

I have a great suggestion, for the need and urgency is great for this volunteer opportunity, and you will find something for everyone on your team! The Salvation Army of Dane County is hosting the Macker 3On3 Basketball Tournament this weekend, with opening ceremony at 8 a.m. Saturday morning, and it really needs more volunteer help to make this a fun and memorable experience for all involved.

Why pick this volunteer opportunity to commit to? During the recent heat emergency in Madison, Salvation Army staff and volunteers provided 1,653 meals at the two city of Madison cooling sites at Monona Terrace and Warner Park. It also is providing whatever ongoing support might be requested by community emergency personnel. These meals were in addition to the regularly prepared meals for shelter residents and for kids at the SA community center’s Kids Cafe.

Now the Salvation Army needs YOUR help. It simply needs more volunteers because its own human resources are quickly being depleted, but the show must go on!

Yes, Saturday’s going to be a warm one (not nearly as hot as today), so there will be plenty of water and shade stations for volunteers. But as a result of the weather, work shifts have been shortened from a half day to two to four hours each (meaning we suddenly need a LOT more people to handle the same event!).

The tournament is Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22, at the Truax Campus of Madison College. Tournament highlights include two full days of basketball action, a slam-dunk contest, youth activities, numerous food and product vendors, and more. Players and spectators of all ages are invited to take part in the 3On3 hoop experience (register teams at the Macker Tournament website).

The Salvation Army is requesting help from referees (ages 16 and up), court monitors, scorekeepers, general setup help, and people to handle registration and/or to serve food/water.

If you can volunteer (it would be a fun family activity as well an intriguing company commitment), please contact The important thing to remember, of course, is that the money raised directly benefits the community by supporting Salvation Army programming for youth programs, food pantries, emergency disaster services, and shelter. Need and service demands are at an all-time high when available dollars are at an all-time low, and this is a great way to donate that which is most needed by your community – your time.

Thanks for considering it, and I hope to see you there – watching, playing, volunteering, or (hopefully) all three!
