Great Dane Japan in the works

A quirky idea from years past is coming true for Rob LoBreglio, co-founder of the Great Dane Pub & Brewing Co., who is looking to open a craft-brewing facility in Sendai, Japan, a city north of Tokyo that was devastated by a 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

According to a story from The Capital Times, LoBreglio is moving forward on plans for a 4,000 to 5,000-square-foot production facility that would serve beer made with Wisconsin grains and Japanese hops. If it’s successful, several more pubs, including one in Tokyo, would be planned.

The Japanese government has been offering businesses subsidies to help the area rebuild, and LoBreglio plans to build a facility that produces 3,000 barrels initially, with the capacity to expand to 12,000 barrels eventually. Shinji Muramoto, who was born in Japan and founded Restaurant Muramoto in Madison, will develop the menu.
