Grant announced for Vel Phillips statue
A $100,000 grant from the Madison Community Foundation and the Oscar Rennebohm Foundation will help fund the creation of a statue on the state Capitol grounds to honor Vel Phillips, according to a release from the Madison Community Foundation.
Former Wisconsin Secretary of State Velvalea “Vel” Phillips, a civil rights advocate, attorney, judge, and politician, was the first woman to hold the office of secretary of state in Wisconsin. After the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020, Gov. Tony Evers appointed an advisory committee co-chaired by Michael Johnson, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, and Dave Endres, corporate legal counsel for American Family Insurance, to study the possibility of creating and installing a sculpture honoring Phillips at the Capitol.
