Goat farm proposed
In a story from the Wisconsin State Journal, the owners of a new dairy are hoping to purchase about 250-acres in Jefferson County on which they propose a 9,000-animal goat farm. If approved, the farm could be operational a year from now and would be among the largest goat-milking operations in the world.
Wisconsin has the most goats in the country, but doesn’t produce the quantities of goat’s milk required for the state’s goat-cheese industry, one that is booming in demand.
The proposed Drumlin facility would employ 14 full-time workers and have 7,000 milking does and 2,000 kids. Milk production would reach about 25 tons a day and manure would be composted on site.
