Get Fit fishing fan finds yoga
Ten professionals and 10 teams are competing in the 2014 Get Fit Challenge, a spinoff of IB’s popular Fittest Executive Challenge. Who will earn the healthiest marks? This week, IB checks in with Josh Meester of Insurance Services Group, which is competing in the team challenge. Meester’s co-workers Jen Brydges, Brendon DeRouin, and Nick Krey round out the team.
For me, the summer has always meant traveling up north, spending time fishing, and attending lots of weddings, which all involve a lot of unhealthy food and drink and make it difficult to spend time in the gym.
Even when it’s not summer, I’ve never been much of a gym-goer and haven’t been the healthiest of eaters, but I’ve always stayed active by participating in volleyball and basketball leagues and will sometimes be inclined to choose veggies over fries.
I knew going into this competition that I wouldn’t “flip a switch” and go on some crazy diet or intense training program that would be impossible to maintain after the competition is over. For me, this competition is about making small lifestyle shifts that will benefit me now and potentially lead to bigger changes in the long run. Over the past several months, even while enjoying the business of summer, I have made moving every day a priority, along with increasing my fruit, vegetable, and water intake.
My teammates and I take a few minutes here and there out of our busy days to move through some yoga poses and some strength-training exercises. I always feel rejuvenated when we’re finished, and I find that even 10 minutes of activity significantly increases my focus and productivity. I can also tell that I’m getting stronger and more flexible. I would have never guessed that I’d enjoy yoga!
This competition has helped me put an emphasis on my well-being, and I know that the small changes I have made will be easy to stick with once the competition is over.
